“ . . . Healthy wetlands are essential for our daily survival – and for tackling the world’s climate and nature crises . . . . But the world’s wetlands are in crisis. We have lost over a third since 1970. And we are continuing to degrade and destroy them.”      World Wildlife Fund

In Campbell River, British Columbia, wetlands adjacent to Simms Creek will be the next victim to degradation and destruction. A provincial ministry has approved a developer’s application to remove and build on wetlands that feed the creek. This decision goes against the advice of the province’s own biologists. It goes against all we have learned about the connectivity of strong, biodiverse ecosystems.

Simms Creek is a salmon-bearing stream, part of a large watershed connecting forest to ocean. Within city limits, it supports an incredible web of life – bears, deer, birds and coho salmon. Streamkeepers actively monitor the creek, and coho fry are raised and released by school children anticipating their return to spawn at the end of their remarkable life cycle. The wetlands are an integral component of this urban gem, and they are at risk.

Save Simms Creek Society is a neighbourhood group formed in 2023 to oppose the development – three buildings, four storeys each, two levels of underground parking, and 200 units – the wrong development in the wrong place.

We have taken action – launching a legal appeal to protect this forest, this water, and the life it sustains, but we can’t do it alone. Legal and expert costs are significant, and our goal to raise $25,000 to cover these expenses is achievable with your help.
